Lao Mao Cafe sits quietly on the first floor of Megah Rise Mall, offering a comfortable spot for those seeking a casual and unpretentious dining experience with a distinctly local flavor. This cafe is a steady part of the Taman Megah neighborhood rhythm, where regulars—especially older residents—often drop by in the afternoons for familiar Malaysian classics paired with simple, sweet treats.

The atmosphere feels welcoming without fuss, enlivened by the friendly and approachable staff who make a point of connecting personally with diners. It’s easy to see why many locals choose Lao Mao for quick lunches or a relaxed break during mall visits. The seating and layout reflect a practical design that encourages a steady flow of customers rather than lingering all day.

Food-wise, the cafe leans on well-loved Malaysian dishes that resonate with both longtime locals and visitors curious about regional tastes. The Sarawak Laksa and Assam Laksa are staples here, striking a balance between traditional spices and fresh, quality ingredients without overwhelming the palate. Alongside these, the Kolo Mee and Beef Noodles offer simple yet satisfying meal options. The Nasi Lemak, available with either curry or fried chicken, rounds out the local fare, making it a spot for anyone wanting to sample authentic flavors in straightforward portions.

For those with a sweet tooth, the cafe’s selection of cakes, such as Butter Cake and Pandan Cake, along with traditional snacks like curry puffs, complement the savory dishes well. Their three-layer tea is notably popular, providing a nostalgic beverage choice that fits comfortably into the menu’s Malaysian culinary context.

One notable feature is the cafe’s dog-friendly policy, which adds to the welcoming vibe and makes it a convenient stop for pet owners in the area. Overall, Lao Mao Cafe works well as an easygoing lunch or snack destination for locals running errands or shoppers seeking a familiar meal away from the bustle of the mall’s main thoroughfares.

Dog friendly cafe on the 1st floor. Assam laksa, beef noodles and Mee kolok are staples together with nasi lemak. Curry puff is goood and the cendol is rich and great taste of gula Melaka. A magnet for neighbourhood oldies for afternoon cakes and desserts. Marianne and staff are cheerful and every customer gets a warm greeting and service.

We actually enjoyed everything we ordered here. Sarawak laksa and kolo mee were good. That explains the crowd at this place whenever we pass by. Lady boss was friendly and went to check on each table. Good spot for a quick and casual dining in the mall.

As a penangite, i would recommend anyone who craving penang assam laksa to come here and give it a try. The taste is not overwhelmed and quite balanced. The ingredients taste fresh and very packed in the bowl. Prawn paste also didnt taste too heavy or smelly, it is more to sweet side. Back in penang, i dont even order with prawn paste. Even tho i ordered small but definitely bigger than small portion back in penang. Nasi lemak rice is way fragrance than most of the branded nasi lemak shops out thr. Sambal is more to chinese style, that has anchovies and not spicy.

Great food with variety choice from Sarawak Laksa, Beef Noodles, Assam Laksa Kolo noodles to Nasi Lamak and Sourdough and croissant. All the ingredient prepare by the seller. The Cendol is a must with fragrant of coconut sugar.

Love the food here and service quality is a delight. Across 2 visits with a few dining companions, tried the following and all were excellent! * Sarawak Laksa - One of the best broths I have had with this dish. Full of quality spices and extremely well balanced flavours. Noodles have food bite and toppings all tasty. * Kolo Mee - A friend had this and said it tasted true to the flavours of the best he has tried in Sarawak. * Assam/Penang Laksa - once again, an excellent broth. Was told that they do not use sugar but get the sweetness from the use of pineapples. It has a delicious umami quality. * Sourdough with Chicken Curry - Outstanding curry chicken. There is not coconut santan used. Again, you can taste the complexity of a well balanced and extensive spice recipe being utilised. The sourdough had a good sour taste which is usually an indicator that the dough has been allowed to ferment for a good period. Had a few sips of the chendol here. Heavenly Gula Malacca - again, quality of the ingredient shines through. Delicious finish to any meal.

Caught up with friends at a Sarawakian cafe. The mee kolo was tasty and the laksa was great. The pandan cake was moist and paired superbly with coffee

Authetic Sarawak Laksa and Kolo Mee. Nasi lemak with fried chicken served with 2 types of sambal, choice of fried chicken or curry chicken. Beef noodle is excellent too. After meal, get a bowl of delicious cendol to finish off the meal. Even a little pricey, but the taste is good and portion is big enough. Strongly recommended.
